The New York DMV allows motorists to display custom license plates (aka vanity plates). The current basic price to order a vanity plate is $81.25 plus an annual fee of $31.25.
Vanity plate requests are screened for a variety of issues including to avoid plates which are “obscene, lewd, lascivious, derogatory to a particular ethnic or other group, or patently offensive.” However, often some inappropriate plates slip passed DMV censors.

Matthew J. Weiss, Esq. graduated Hofstra Law School in 1984. He was Law Review and won the law school's prestigious Procedure Award. This week a New Jersey motorist was required to return her vanity plate when one of her neighbors reported it to DMV as “offensive”. The plate was “BIOCH”.
