Truck Crossover Mirrors To Be Required

A new law requiring trucks to have crossover mirrors installed is picking up steam.  These special mirrors allow truck drivers to see people who immediately in front of their vehicle.

A few weeks ago a young boy was tragically killed in Brooklyn while riding a tricycle.  A crossover mirror would have allowed the driver to see the boy in front of his truck.  The mirror costs roughly $90 and certainly this is a law which should be passed.  Hopefully, the Legislature can act quickly.

Because *one* boy was killed in an accident – which may or may not have had anything to do with the driver’s seeing the boy – we’re going to go all out and require that every medium/heavy duty truck have one of these mirrors? At a cost of more than $100 (installed) per? So, what, we’ll save one life ten years from now? Couldn’t we find better uses for this money?

      Nachman,

I have to disagree with you on this one. I think it is a small price to pay to avoid other fatalities and injuries. There are 100s of pedestrian accidents in the City each year and hopefully this safety device will help reduce that number.

Yep sure, we are all need an accident safe society, in order to make them effectively we should agree with the safest techniques whatever it is. I accept and highly recommend to have this law passed immediately…

I believe the mirror its self creates a blind spot. I think the mirror only will be helpful on certain trucks but not all. Maybe a beeper censer would work better. As far as the cost goes,You will have to replace the mirror every time you park in NYC.

    • Andy,

Thanks for your feedback. I haven’t heard this complaint yet about the crossover mirrors but will certainly keep my hears open for it.
