Driving Between Lanes Is A Moving Violation

Home » Traffic Articles

[ Back to Traffic Articles ]

When you drive a motorcycle between traffic lanes, you are committing a 2-point traffic offense. NYC cops issue many tickets for this type of offense each year.

Motorcyclists engage in this maneuver to beat City traffic. While it may be effective, it is very dangerous to drive between lanes. A driver could change lanes into you, a parked driver could open his or her driver’s side door and hit you (or you hit it), or a motorist could drift within his or her lane and strike you.  Motorcyclists driving between lanes are often traveling within the blind spots of nearby motorists.

While this summons is usually issued to motorcyclists, it is also issued to those driving scooters, Vespas and other two-wheeled vehicles.
